This is a review about Zemamnesh Campbell’s end of year BA Exhibition work. She was interviewed by a representative from the warehouse express by the name of Steve Aves.

“Looking through the galleries at the Free Range Graduate Art & Design Summer Show was a real treat for someone like me who likes looking at pictures. The diversity was incredible and I was wondering if I would ‘discover’ a new talent. I was beginning to give up, but from a distance I saw some images around a pillar in the middle of one of the galleries. Not the best place to have ones work displayed, however, even from a distance, I knew that these images were special.”

Throughout society black woman are able to change their character / personality that can reflect their different moods and cultural background. Growing up as a black female Zemamnesh noticed that her siblings and peers had often changed their appearance through many different hairstyles.  She also found that they looked at the latest hair trends through different sources of media, for example: music, TV, movies, and hair magazines. These hair crazes stems back to the 1980’s Jamaican Dancehall music.

It shows the diversity of the black female ideology through the way in which they wear their hair. In Zemamnesh’s opinion black women wear their hair to make a statement to others and themselves. The media’s portrayal of black women seems to demonstrate that their hair is important in the way in which they appear to others.

Zemamnesh has used the expression ‘week to week’ as an indication of how often these hairstyles can be changed to show different personalities.
